Effects on Brain

The active ingredient in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. It passes the lungs and goes into the bloodstream. It goes through many of the body's organs, including the brain.

In the brain, THC links to specific sites called cannabinoid receptors. These control the activity of some nerve cells. Some brain areas have a lot of cannabinoid receptors. Some have less and some has none. Lots of cannabinoid receptors are found in parts of the brain that causes pleasure, memory, thought, and coordinated movement. Marijuana may prevent epileptic seizures in some people.

The short term effects are reduced memory and learning, a feeling that you "can't think straight," and reduced coordination. People report a peaceful feeling and reduced anxiety. They are sometimes sleepy. Reduced motivation has been reported.

  1. its a nice one. . . smoking marijuana. The people who researched this think that this might be caused from marijuana's effects on blood pressure, heart rate, and reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.alberta medical marijuana
